Sashing, Borders & Bindings Class Supply List Instructor: Melanie Schatz-Pattay GreenAcresQuiltsMN@gmail.com

This is a techniques class. We will be going over and practicing techniques for sashing (fabric strips around each block), borders (fabric strips around the outside of the quilt), and binding. The goal is to complete a simple quilt top in addition to learning the techniques.

Fabric: • 6 – 9 Quilt Blocks – These blocks can be any size, as long as they are all the same size. They can be a pieced or just a solid fabric.
• Sashing Fabric – Here’s guideline for calculating how much fabric you need: o 2 x # of blocks, + 1 for each row, + 1 for each column, x the width of your block = the total length of sashing you need. ▪ The total length, divided by 42, gives you the number of strips you need. The number of strips times your strip width will give you the yardage you will need.

*NOTE, always add an additional strip, don’t get caught short.
• Contrast Corner Stone Fabric – for 6 blocks, you will need 6 – 10 squares, and for 9 blocks its 8 – 12 squares. If you are using 2 ½” strips for sashing, 1 strip that’s 2 ½” x WOF will work. If your sashing is wider, you may need more than one strip.
• Border Fabric – bring 1 to 2 fabrics for outside borders.

Please also bring to class: • Sewing Machine and basic tools (such as thread, scissor, seam ripper, spare needles, thread, power cord and foot pedal for your machine.) • Rotary Cutter. Large Cutting Mats are available in the classroom, but feel free to bring you own. • Rotary Ruler. Please bring a 6” x 24” at a minimum. Also, a Stripology or Stripology Squared Ruler can be really handy to help make sure you keep your blocks square as you work on them. • Small Irons and Pressing Mats that fit next to your working space can be handy, but large irons and pressing tables are available in the classroom. • Spray Starch, like Best Press.
